Bel Air Events | St. Patrick Catholic Church | Emily & Jared Kokomo Wedding

Jennifer Van Elk

The air was serene at the end of the day, and the restless light of the setting sun cut through it in an attempt to kiss the earth one last time before the end of day. To escape the hustle and bustle of their reception, Emily and Jared took a short break on the balcony of Bel Air Events. The calm air held them as they held each other, peaceful and soothing. The last of the sunlight beaming down on the earth whizzed around, touching the glass, the stone, and the metal and reflecting back out again. It's last few frantic seconds reminding them, urging them, to go back inside to dance and enjoy the night, the party, the people, the music and the dancing. With time, and effort, they untangled themselves from each other on the balcony and went back to the dance floor to enjoy tangling themselves up in each other over and over again.

St. Patrick Catholic Church is one of the prettiest catholic churches I have visited. With its beautiful white floors and unique architecture, it's truly a space that needs no extra decor. As I stepped into the church basement lit by fluorescent lights, I felt my heart sinking a little bit. I began thinking of ways to shoot Emily's getting ready photos to try to avoid the poor lighting conditions in the basement, without forcing her to leave her dressing area. Thankfully Emily was okay with us shutting off the lights, saying "Whatever you think will look best!" She was a photographers dream bride! I'm so glad she trusted me, even though it might have felt a little silly getting dressed in a dark basement.

After that we headed over to Highland Park, where I had the opportunity to capture some shots of the two of them at the Vermont Covered Bridge. It's an antiquated beauty and the last Smith Type #3 Truss bridge in Indiana. The lights in the covered bridge had not yet been hung the last time we had a shoot there, so I was ecstatic to see them hanging this time and lit up. There is such beautiful light coming into the Vermont Covered Bridge through the gaps between the planks of wood. That light added just a little extra flare to the scene, allowing me to create unique and gorgeous portraits for these two.

I had so much fun capturing Emily and Jared on their wedding day. Emily is incredibly sweet. She reminds me of a dear friend. She is sweet, confident, and welcoming. Jared, was a perfect match for her. They say opposites attract, but for these two, that isn't true. His kind demeanor attracted hers. When I did the engagement shoot with the two of them, Jared was very quiet. There was an extra pep in his step on his wedding day though. I could just tell by the way he said,  "Hello," that he was elated on his wedding day. At the end of the day the reception took place at Bel Air Events. Bel Air Events is such an elegant venue. It was a lot of fun to shoot there again. I am so happy for Emily and Jared, and so thrilled that I was able to capture their enchanting wedding!
